Jung's synchronicity is not simply an “uncanny coincidence.” It describes a particular correspondence: two or more events have no discoverable causal relation, yet are connected by the same or similar meaning. In the typical case, one event occurs within a person—a dream, an image, an intense psychological state—while another occurs in the external world. Neither causes the other, yet they seem to say the same thing in different languages.
His best-known example took place in a consulting room in Zurich. It is not a story of an illness suddenly cured by an insect, but of a long-stalled analysis. The young woman facing Jung was highly intelligent and rational, able to explain away almost every emotion and symbol. Treatment made little progress because whenever it approached genuine psychological change, her intellect dismantled it first. In this impasse she described a dream in which someone gave her a piece of jewelry shaped like a golden scarab. At that moment something struck the window. Jung opened it, caught a rose chafer—the local insect closest to a golden scarab—and handed it to her: “Here is your scarab.” Its force was not magical. The same symbol had entered the therapeutic scene at precisely that moment: in ancient imagery, the scarab is often associated with renewal, rebirth, and transformation, while what the patient most lacked was genuine psychological change.
The core of synchronicity is therefore not低概率low probability,而是but意义上的对应correspondence in meaning。 An ordinary coincidence can be extremely rare yet unrelated to a person's life situation. A synchronistic experience makes inner and outer events suddenly display the same structure. To the person involved, it can feel as though the world has momentarily taken the shape of the psyche.
Jung later went further. He wanted not only to describe this psychological experience, but to propose a bolder possibility: psyche and the material world may not be absolutely separate, and in rare moments one deeper meaning might appear simultaneously in a person's mind and in external events. This proposal is the most compelling and most controversial part of synchronicity.
A clear boundary must remain here:“这件事对我具有深刻意义”“This event has profound meaning for me”,与and“宇宙客观地安排了这件事”“The universe objectively arranged this event”,不是同一个命题。 are not the same proposition. The first is a real human experience; the second is a philosophical and metaphysical hypothesis developed by Jung, not a law of nature confirmed by experimental science.
Causality means one event produces another.
Synchronicity means two events do not produce one another, yet seem to express the same meaning in different languages.
A correspondence appears between an inner psychological state and an external event, with no discoverable causal link yet special meaning for the person involved.
Jung further speculated that such correspondence might indicate a deeper order in which psyche and matter are different manifestations of the same meaning.
